Understanding Anxiety: When Worry Takes Over

Feeling anxious is a normal part of life. It’s your body’s way of responding to stress or perceived danger — a survival instinct that can help you stay alert and focused. But sometimes, anxiety becomes more than just an occasional feeling. It can start to take over your thoughts, affect your body, and make everyday tasks feel difficult or overwhelming.

At Jaclyn Lim Psychology, we work with people of all ages who are struggling with anxiety. Whether your anxiety is new, has been present for years, or comes and goes with certain life events, help is available — and you don’t have to go through it alone.

What Is Anxiety?

Anxiety is your body’s built-in alarm system. When the brain senses a threat — even a small one — it sends signals to prepare your body to fight, flee, or freeze. You might feel this as:

  • A racing heart
  • Rapid breathing
  • Muscle tension
  • A churning stomach
  • Sweating or shaking

These reactions are helpful in short bursts. But when your brain becomes over-sensitive to perceived threats, anxiety can start to interfere with everyday life — even when there’s no real danger.

Signs You Might Be Experiencing Anxiety

Everyone’s experience of anxiety is different, but some common signs include:

  • Constant or excessive worrying
  • Feeling restless, nervous, or on edge
  • Avoiding certain people, places, or activities
  • Difficulty sleeping or relaxing
  • Trouble concentrating or “switching off” your thoughts
  • Feeling overwhelmed by everyday decisions
  • Physical symptoms like headaches, nausea, or tightness in the chest

Children and adolescents may also show anxiety through irritability, meltdowns, clinginess, or physical complaints like stomach aches.

Types of Anxiety

There are different forms of anxiety, and it’s common to experience more than one:

  • Generalised Anxiety: Ongoing worry about many areas of life (e.g., school, work, relationships)
  • Social Anxiety: Fear of being judged, embarrassed, or rejected in social situations
  • Panic Attacks: Sudden, intense episodes of fear with physical symptoms
  • Health Anxiety: Preoccupation with illness or physical symptoms
  • Specific Phobias: Intense fear of a particular object or situation (e.g., flying, needles, dogs)
  • Performance Anxiety: Fear of being evaluated or not meeting expectations
  • Separation Anxiety: Fear of being away from loved ones (especially in children)

What Causes Anxiety?

Anxiety is influenced by a mix of factors:

  • Genetics and family history
  • Personality traits (e.g. sensitivity, perfectionism)
  • Stressful life events or trauma
  • Learned behaviours from caregivers or environments
  • Physical health conditions or hormonal changes

Sometimes there’s a clear trigger — other times, anxiety seems to appear without warning.

How Therapy Can Help

Anxiety is treatable, and many people find relief through therapy. At Jaclyn Lim Psychology, we offer evidence-based support tailored to each person’s age, needs, and goals.

Therapy can help you:

  • Understand how anxiety works and why it shows up
  • Identify and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns
  • Learn calming strategies for your body and mind
  • Build confidence in facing feared situations
  • Reduce avoidance behaviours that keep anxiety going
  • Strengthen self-compassion and emotional resilience

We offer structured therapies like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as more relational or mindfulness-based approaches. Therapy is always personalised — we work at your pace, in a supportive and non-judgmental space.
