Internet-Delivered PCIT vs. Traditional Parenting Support: What’s the Difference?

Parenting a young child can be incredibly rewarding — and incredibly challenging. If your child is experiencing frequent tantrums, defiance, or emotional outbursts, you might be exploring parenting resources to help you regain calm and connection at home.

While traditional parenting advice can be helpful, it often falls short when behaviours become persistent or overwhelming. Internet-Delivered Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (iPCIT) is a powerful alternative that offers structured, real-time support — right from your own home.

In this blog, we explore the key differences between I-PCIT and more traditional parenting support options, so you can make an informed choice for your family.

What Is Traditional Parenting Support?

Traditional parenting support often includes:

  • Books and blogs
  • Parenting workshops and webinars
  • General advice from healthcare providers
  • Online parenting courses or peer groups

These resources can offer broad strategies for communication, discipline, and emotional development. However, they’re typically not personalised, don’t involve direct observation, and may not address entrenched behavioural difficulties in young children.

What Is Internet-Delivered PCIT (iPCIT)?

iPCIT is the online version of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy, an evidence-based treatment for children aged 2–7 who are experiencing disruptive behaviours, aggression, or emotional regulation difficulties.

Instead of attending sessions in a clinic, families participate via secure video calls, with the therapist observing parent-child interactions in the home environment. The therapist provides live coaching to the parent via a Bluetooth earpiece or similar device, helping them apply new strategies in real time.

This approach combines the structure and effectiveness of PCIT with the convenience and comfort of your own home.

How Does iPCIT Work?

Like in-person PCIT, iPCIT has two key phases:

1. Child-Directed Interaction (CDI)

Parents learn how to strengthen the parent-child relationship through positive play and emotional connection. This phase fosters cooperation, warmth, and secure attachment.

2. Parent-Directed Interaction (PDI)

Parents are coached in giving clear, calm instructions and using consistent consequences. The goal is to manage misbehaviour effectively while preserving the emotional bond.

Because the therapist observes interactions in your real-life environment, coaching is highly relevant, immediately applicable, and often more generalisable to daily routines.
