The arrival of a baby brings many changes — joy, exhaustion, uncertainty, and everything in between. While this transition is often seen as a happy time, it can also be emotionally complex and incredibly challenging. For some parents, it brings not just tiredness or stress, but persistent low mood, anxiety, or a sense of disconnection that doesn’t seem to pass.
This may be a sign of postnatal depression — and it can affect both mothers and fathers.
At Jaclyn Lim Psychology, we offer compassionate, evidence-based support to new parents navigating the emotional toll of early parenthood. Whether you’re a mum or dad, your mental health matters — and you don’t have to face this alone.
What Is Postnatal Depression?
Postnatal depression (also known as postpartum depression, PND, PPD) is a common mental health condition that can develop after the birth of a child. It affects up to 1 in 5 mothers — and up to 1 in 10 fathers or non-birthing partners. While it often begins in the weeks after birth, it can develop any time within the first year postpartum.
Postnatal depression is more than just exhaustion or the “baby blues.” It involves persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or emotional flatness that can interfere with your ability to function or bond with your baby.
Signs and Symptoms in New Parents
Postnatal depression can look different in each parent, but some common symptoms include:
- Persistent low mood or tearfulness
- Loss of interest or enjoyment in daily life
- Difficulty bonding with your baby
- Constant worry or feeling “on edge”
- Feeling numb, disconnected, or emotionally distant
- Increased irritability or anger
- Guilt, shame, or a sense of failure
- Avoidance of social interactions
- Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
- Changes in sleep or appetite beyond typical baby-related disruptions
- Thoughts of self-harm or feeling like you’re not coping
In dads and non-birthing partners, symptoms may also include:
- Withdrawing from family or work
- Escaping through work, screens, or substances
- Feeling unsupported or helpless
- Physical symptoms like headaches or digestive issues
- Hiding emotions due to stigma or pressure to “stay strong”
What Causes Postnatal Depression?
There is no single cause — rather, a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. These can include:
- Hormonal shifts (particularly for birthing parents)
- Sleep deprivation and exhaustion
- Birth trauma or complications
- Changes in identity, roles, or relationship dynamics
- Financial stress or lack of support
- History of depression, anxiety, or trauma
- Feeling isolated, overwhelmed, or unprepared
Even in well-supported families, PND can occur. It does not reflect your love for your child, nor does it mean you’re doing something wrong or that you’re a bad parent.
How Therapy Can Help
Support is available, and reaching out is a strength — not a weakness. At Jaclyn Lim Psychology, therapy is tailored to each parent’s experience. We provide a calm, confidential space to:
- Make sense of your thoughts and emotions
- Understand the impact of postnatal changes on your mental health
- Gently challenge self-critical thinking
- Learn practical coping tools for mood, anxiety, and overwhelm
- Rebuild confidence in your parenting and relationships
- Process birth experiences, if traumatic or difficult
- Strengthen connection — with your child, partner, and yourself
We use evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness, and self-compassion-focused work. Sessions move at your pace and are always non-judgmental.
